The vLex and Fastcase alternative.
vLex and Fastcase are one company, and Clio acquired vLex for one billion dollars in November 2025. If you pay bar dues, you may already have a tier of it for free.
This page says what the free tier really includes, prices Vincent, and names where vLex wins outright.
Verified 2026-08-24. Every figure carries its source and read date.
Check this before you pay anyone
vLex is the one competitor on this site where the honest first move is to tell you not to buy anything.
Your bar may include it
More than 40 state bar associations provide a free Fastcase or vLex tier as a membership benefit. If you pay bar dues, confirm what your package includes before paying anyone else. This is the most underused research asset in the profession.
International coverage
vLex carries case law from more than 100 countries. If your practice touches non-US authority, no alternative on this site reaches it and that is not close.
You run Clio
Clio acquired vLex in November 2025 and Vincent is bundled into Clio Work. If your matters, billing, and documents already live in Clio, that integration has real workflow value.
The free bar tier has a specific limit worth knowing. It generally excludes the advanced AI features and, depending on the state and the tier, the full citator. The case law is real. The verification layer is where the paid line sits.
What vLex costs
vLex publishes less than Thomson Reuters and more than LexisNexis. The figures below are reported entry points with dated sources.
| Product | Reported rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fastcase via bar membership | $0 | Provided by 40+ state bars. Excludes advanced AI features and, in some states, the full citator.Casefleet legal research comparison, June 6 2026 |
| vLex research subscription | from ~$65 / mo | Reported entry point for a paid research tier.Casefleet, June 6 2026 |
| Vincent bundled into Clio Work | ~$199 / user / mo | Reported. Requires the Clio platform underneath.Casefleet, June 6 2026 |
| Clio Duo add-on | $49 to $59 / mo | On top of base Clio pricing. Bundles reported at $119 to $179.thelegalprompts.com, February 25 2026 |
| Marcella Firm | $99 / seat / mo | 1 to 25 seats, annual billing, Technology Outlaws hosted. Published rate, no sales call. |
| Marcella BOYA | $278 / mo flat | 3 seats. Deploys in the firm's own Azure tenant. |
Read what the platform underneath costs. Vincent at roughly $199 per user per month assumes you are paying for Clio Work as well. Comparing that number to a standalone research subscription compares two different purchases.
The silo did not go away, it changed owners
Clio acquired vLex for one billion dollars in November 2025. That put a research corpus underneath a practice management platform for the first time at scale, and it is a genuinely strong strategic position.
It did not change what the corpus contains. A Clio user searching Vincent searches vLex content. Wright and Miller is West. Prosser is West. Collier is Matthew Bender. None of them arrive with the acquisition, and a firm that needs authority across publishers still pays more than once. Full breakdown of the silo problem.
What Marcella does differently
Citation relationships in the public record are not owned by any publisher. Marcella maps how courts have cited and applied authority from public court records, covering 26 canonical treatise families and 14 ALI Restatements. That tells you how a treatise position has been treated by courts without licensing the treatise text, and it crosses every publisher boundary because the source is the docket rather than a catalog.
Marcella is also not a practice management system and does not try to be. If you run Clio, Marcella adds research and document analysis inside Microsoft 365 without touching how your firm runs.
Feature by feature
| Capability | vLex | Marcella |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Real, and provided by 40+ state bars. The strongest free offering in the category. | No free tier. Trials at $20 for 7 days and $35 for 30 days. |
| International case law | 100+ countries. Not matched by anything on this site. | United States federal and state. No international coverage. |
| Practice management integration | Owned by Clio since November 2025. Vincent bundles into Clio Work. | Not a practice management system. Runs inside Microsoft 365 alongside whatever you use. |
| Cross-publisher treatment | vLex content. Other publishers require other subscriptions. | Citation relationships mapped from public court records, which crosses every publisher silo. |
| Where client data sits | vLex and Clio infrastructure under the subscription terms. | On Bring Your Own Azure tiers, the firm's own Azure and Microsoft 365 tenant, with no copy held by Technology Outlaws. |
| Daubert attestation | Not offered as a structured record. | Six-item attestation on every citation: real source, good law, overruled, distinguished, questioned, treatment history. |
The first two rows are vLex wins outright. If your bar includes Fastcase and your practice is domestic, start there and add only what the free tier does not cover.
Questions
Are Fastcase and vLex the same company?
Yes. vLex and Fastcase merged, and Clio acquired the combined company for one billion dollars in November 2025. Comparing Fastcase to vLex compares a product to its own parent.
Is Fastcase really free through my bar association?
More than 40 state bar associations include a Fastcase or vLex tier with membership. The case law access is real. The tier generally excludes the advanced AI features and, depending on the state, the full citator. Confirm what your specific package includes with your bar.
How much does Vincent AI cost?
Reported at roughly $199 per user per month bundled into Clio Work, which means the Clio platform cost sits underneath it. A standalone vLex research subscription is reported starting near $65 per month.
Does Marcella work alongside Clio?
Yes. Marcella is a research and document analysis platform, not a practice management system. It runs inside Microsoft 365 and does not change how your matters, billing, or calendaring work.
Does vLex cross publisher boundaries?
No platform does at the content layer. vLex searches vLex content. Treatises published by West and Matthew Bender require their own subscriptions. Citation relationships in public court records are not owned by any publisher, which is the layer Marcella maps.
Check your bar benefit first. If it does not cover the citator and the document workflow, launch pricing starts at $99 per seat per month.
